Tuesday 9/14 - Conversation about Traffic Safety and Transportation on Foster - Kern Park Church 6828 SE Holgate - 6:30-8:00pm

 2009 Priorities
DRAFT: Current 2009 Priorities
Last updated: September 4, 2008

Please note: there are other issues which matter a great deal to me but do not appear on this list because other legislators are taking the lead.

Climate Change: Aligning with the Western Climate Initiative; establishing a cap and trade program; ensuring that the transportation package is climate-friendly

Informed Growth Act: Following the lead of Maine's recent Informed Growth Act, which empowers communities to make sound decisions regarding the development of big box retailers in their jurisdiction; requires environmental and economic impact studies during the planning process and allows communities to reject plans based on environmental and economic concerns

Health Care Reform: Working with the recommendations of the Oregon Health Fund Board to lower health care costs, increase access, and improve quality.

Health Insurance for Young Adults: Requiring that health insurance companies allow young adults to stay on their parents' health care policies until they are 30 years old, as long as they are single and do not have dependents of their own; allows insurance companies to make limited increases in premium prices for these young adults

Hearing Aid Coverage for Kids: Mandating health insurance coverage for hearing aids for children

Paid Family Leave: Establishing a system that allows employees to take up to 6 weeks off following the birth or adoption of a child or to care for a sick relative

For-Profit Anatomical Gift Regulation: Working with various stakeholders to establish regulations for the emerging for-profit whole-body donation business in order to ensure that consumer rights and public health are protected

Campaign Finance: Limiting campaign donations in a way that makes sense; working toward the establishment of Voter Owned Elections

Making Voter Registration Easier: Referring a constitutional amendment to voters that would allow Oregonians to register up to and on Election Day, including the establishment of registration centers on college and university campuses; also, passing legislation which triggers automatic voter registration when obtaining a driver's license at DMV; also, exploring options for online voter registration

National Popular Vote: Joining 12 more states in a compact that would direct electors to choose whichever nominee gets the most votes nationally during the Electoral College process

Initiative Reform: Continuing to take a look at reforming Oregon's initiative system in order to promote carefully-crafted, fiscally-responsible ballot measures.

Meaningful Revenue Reform: Improving the stability and adequacy of Oregon's revenue system; evaluating recommendations of the Task Force on Revenue Reform.

Beer Tax: Collaborating with Senator Morrisette to continue to push for a beer tax that exempts microbreweries and puts money toward addiction services

School Funding Floor: Creating a baseline for school funding based on the QEM for K-12 education; creating a similar floor for community colleges and universities

Other Issues: Civic education; early childhood education; public funding for ALS research; Bottle Bill
