Legislative Update #4
1. Rep. Cannon launches new legislative website
The new website is launched! Head to www.repbencannon.com to get updates on issues and district events, and to get involved with the Legislature. The website will also maintain an archive of e-newsletters and press clippings.
We welcome your thoughts on how to make the site more useful and usable, and look forward to improving it over time.
2. Upcoming district events
On Saturday, February 24, Ben will hold two events in the district:
8-9am Gathering at Common Grounds Coffee House, 4321 SE Hawthorne Blvd.
9:30-10am Streetcorner meetup at SE 76th and Woodward.
As always, please feel free just to drop by and introduce yourself! These events are a chance to hear about some of the issues Ben is working on, as well as to bring your own thoughts and concerns to him. (The photo to the left is from last Saturday's event at Cooper's Coffee.)
3. Education Rally February 19
Join parents, teachers, students, and other school advocates on the Capitol steps this Monday, February 19 (President's Day) at 12 noon for a rally in support of Oregon's public schools. A lot hangs in the balance this session - if the Legislature is able to find the will and the money, Portland Public Schools will be able to begin building back some of the cuts it has made over the past six years to programs like art, music, and PE. We need to hear from you!
The event is sponsored by Stand for Children, the , and the Upward Bound Capstone class at Portland State University.
4. Consumer Protection bills pass House
On Tuesday, the House of Representatives approved a package of consumer-protection bills that strengthen protections against the predatory practices of some high-cost lending and financial service companies. The package:
places limits on the fees charged by check-cashing outfits and payday lenders (HB 2202, HB 2203);
limits the rate of interest and fees on car title loans (HB 2204);
closes loopholes for out-of-state and internet payday loan lenders (HB 2203); and
strengthens licensing requirements for check cashers and payday lenders (HB 2202, HB 2205)
Rep. Cannon voted yes on all four bills. You can also find all other Oregon bills online.
Best regards,
State Representative Ben Cannon
